Greendrinks Glasgow: Salvage Not Scrap

  • The Project Cafe Renfrew Street Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom (map)

SEDA invite you to an evening to discuss one of the key issues of reducing embodied energy in modern building, how to re-use structural steel elements, with Roy Fishwick and Tom Hay, who have been developing proposals of how to bring this process into mainstream construction.

If you’ve ever seen a pile of old scrap I-beams from a demolished building and thought ‘why can these not just be re-used?’: well they can, but it’s not a simple as it seems.

Certification issues between steelwork fabricators and engineers in the UK has previously meant only ‘new’ steel stamped with EC EC marks gets used in construction. Although steel is already a mostly recycled material, re-smelting it from scrap uses a lot of energy.

With the decline of the UK steel manufacturing industry, it has become more attractive to simply reuse steel components reclaimed from demolition or other sources such as decommissioned oil rigs. New guidance from the Steel Construction Institute makes it simpler for engineers, fabricators and architects to do this.
