"Sheds, Shallots and Shenanigans: being together and being alone on Glasgow's allotments"

Hannah Victoria Connelly

Allotments are about being together but allotments are also about being alone. Allotments are about sharing vegetables, helping out and summer barbecues. Allotments are also about fierce independence - producing your own food takes determination - and the space for personal creativity. This presentation will explore the allotment as a paradox of individuality and community through three features of allotment life - sheds, boundaries and the plotholders themselves - using stories from the 1930s to the present day.

Hannah is project officer at Northlight Heritage for "War and Peas"', a community heritage project on allotments during the First World War.

Hannah is Secretary of Glasgow Allotments Forum (GAF) and has recently completed a thesis on the history of Glasgow's allotments.
