Richard established his own Architectural practice in April 2000, specifically to concentrate on three main interests:

Producing buildings, which minimise their detrimental environmental impact, both during construction and in use,

The reinterpretation and conservation of traditional buildings and
-
Working with community groups.
The key aim of the practice is to provide clients with a building design service, rooted in an understanding of their needs and responding to them.
Richard contributes to guides, technical papers and committees promoting sustainability and energy efficiency. He;

Is a Past Chair of the Scottish Ecological Design Association,

Is a nationally elected member of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland’s Ruling Council, Member of the RIAS’s Environment, Housing and Town Planning Board,

Convenes the RIAS Sustainability Task Group,
-
Was a member of the Technical Panel for the BRE / CIBSE advising the authors of "Energy Efficient Services in Historic Buildings",
-
Is a member of the Association of Environment Conscious Building,
-
Is a member of a Building Standards Advisory Committee Working Group and
-
And became Scotland’s first Approved Certifier of Design - Section 6 (Domestic).
Richard has had a leading role in establishing both www.RIAS-regs.co.uk and www.Architectural-EPC.co.uk.
